Self Esteem singer Rebecca Lucy Taylor has received an honorary degree from the University of Sheffield.

The songwriter has been recognized for her success in the music industry and "public advocacy for inclusivity and diversity", said the university.

His record Prioritize Pleasure reached No. 11 on the UK Albums Chart, also earning Brit and Mercury Prize nominations.

Rotherham-born Taylor recently composed the music for the West End and Broadway play Prima Facie, starring Jodie Comer.

The singer received the Doctor of Music award at a graduation ceremony on Monday for students of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.

"I am immensely proud and patriotic about this city and it really, really means the world," she told the graduates.

'Meteoric'

"Rebecca champions inclusive and diverse communities in all the work she does and as a public educator works to meet the rights and aspirations of women to achieve and be proud," the university said.

"Her success came relatively later in life, which is a transparency of her identity, and she uses this meteoric and maturing to reflect on how women are often positioned in music, despite generations of feminism."

The university called her a "proud ambassador of Sheffield", with the singer's Glastonbury 2022 outfit inspired by the city's Meadowhall shopping centre.< /p>
