Under fire, Liz Truss pulled out of a scheduled visit this afternoon as a sixth Tory MP publicly called for her resignation in the Commons.

A No10 source said the Prime Minister was engaged in 'government business' - but gave no specific reason for the trip being cancelled.

The Prime Minister was also due to answer questions from journalists during a meeting with a manufacturer specializing in defense and aerospace technologies in Hertfordshire.

News of the cancellation came after Number 10 emailed reporters at 12.56pm to say the Prime Minister would use the event to 'hear what kind of companies are driving innovation and growth in the UK".

“The Prime Minister remains committed to pursuing growth and ensuring we help businesses thrive,” the email adds.

Earlier, Ms Truss repeated her apology to MPs during Prime Ministers Questions days after she tore up her economic promises and sacked Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng amid turmoil in financial markets.

Attempting to reassert his authority, Tory whips said on Wednesday that a Labor vote on fracking policy tonight would be a “motion of confidence” in his government.

Labour has traditionally said that if the government loses the vote, the Prime Minister will resign and the government will fall.

But a sixth MP, William Wragg, defied orders to comply by explicitly asking Ms Truss to resign - telling the Commons he had 'tabled' a letter of no confidence.
