Should Liz Truss fire Kwasi Kwarteng for her economic chaos mini-budget? Have your say
Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng, in one of his first moves in power, successfully knocked down the pound and sent mortgage costs skyrocketing from everyone. Should Liz Truss Fire Her Chancellor?
Following Friday's 'mini-budget' and the ensuing economic crisis, there have been growing calls to hand over Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng to the axe. (Image: Getty Images)
There are decades when nothing happens, and there are weeks when decades happen, but it just so happens that this week we saw all the economic crises of the past five decades in quick succession, after that Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng didn't-call-it-a-budget "fiscal event".
As the UK again witnessed massive stagflation like the oil crisis (1973), a fall in the pound bigger than Black Wednesday (1992) and a housing crisis of Great Recession (2008) style looming - Should Liz Truss turn around, fire Chancellor Kwarteng and end this economic chaos?
To say that global financial markets have little faith in the new Tory leadership would be an understatement, after the two free-marketers put forward proposals for the biggest tax giveaway in a generation without a single forecast economic is not attached to it.
In fact, the market panic is so pronounced that the Prime Minister and Chancellor were forced to meet with forecasters from the Office for Budget Responsibility today to reassure the markets - which no Prime Minister or Chancellor never done before.
While many Tory MPs supposedly asked their chancellor to get the axe, the political ideology behind this low-tax budget is precisely what Truss campaigned on to win the votes of conservative members. trust?
