Rishi Sunak has greenlighted a key part of Boris Johnson's legacy by pumping £679million of taxpayers' money into a new nuclear power station.

The Prime Minister has backed the injection of funds for Sizewell C in Suffolk - almost three months after Mr Johnson gave his last political speech as Prime Minister on the site, saying the government would back the development.

The project, which supporters say could create 10,000 jobs, is led by the French company EDF, which is largely state-owned.

There had been speculation that the plan could be delayed or even scrapped as a cost-cutting measure after a government official told the BBC that 'every major project' was in the works. examination before the fall statement.

Labour leaders welcomed the announcement, but climate campaigners questioned why ministers were not prioritizing renewables.
