South Africa appoint Shukri Conrad and Rob Walter as head tests and limited overs coaches

South Africa test team meeting

Cricket South Africa (CSA) split roles after Mark Boucher retired after last year's T20 World Cup.

Conrad, 55 years old, is a former top-class cricketer and previously coached South Africa Under-19s.

Both coaches start in February, which means Walter will not be in charge of the three internationals. a day against England, with the first on January 27.

As a test coach, Conrad inherits a struggling side that was beaten at home by England and Australia, and has limited opportunities in the format in 2023.

Malibongwe Maketa acted as interim coach for the three-Test series against Australia in December and January, which South Africa lost 2-0.

Proteas have a two-Test series against West Indies in February, but don't play another Test until welcome India in December.

CSA has reduced the number of fixtures in order to accommodate its new T20 league, SA20, which started more earlier this month, but says the appointment of a specialist test coach shows its commitment to the format.

"We have not relegated Test cricket to the margins," said CSA Managing Director Pholetsi Moseki. "We want to invest in bringing Test cricket back to the level we expect."

Walter, a former South Africa strength and conditioning coach also supports a team underperforming white baller, who has yet to qualify for this year's 50+ World Cup in India and was knocked out of the T20 World Cup by the Netherlands.
