Southampton have rejected Chelsea's offer of £50million for a new 18-year-old signing - Romano

Southampton have rejected a £50m bid from Chelsea for Romeo Lavia in the summer transfer window, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Lavia only signed for the Saints in July, joining Manchester City for £12million.

He was very impressive during his brief stay on the south coast.

The 18-year-old hadn't missed a Premier League minute for Southampton until he suffered the injury in Wednesday's win over Chelsea.

It's a blow for the player and the club, especially after scoring his first goal for the Saints against Thomas Tuchel's side during the week.

Ralph Hasenhuttl confirmed after the result that Lavia should miss around six weeks of action.

Southampton made some very good signings in the summer window, signing several hidden gems, such as Lavia, Armel Bella-Kotchap and Sekou Mara.

Bella-Kotchap and Lavia already seem destined to join one of the Big Six clubs in the Premier League.

And it's been revealed that one of the big boys actually tried to sign the latter in the summer window.

Despite Lavia only joining Southampton two months ago, Chelsea have tabled a whopping £50million offer to sign the Belgian defensive midfielder, claims Fabrizio Romano.

The Italian transfer guru says the Saints flatly rejected the offer and considered the teenager an 'untouchable' player.

Romano also revealed that Manchester City have a £40m buyout clause.

He wrote on Twitter: "Behind the scenes. Chelsea wanted to sign Romeo Lavia on deadline day with a £50m verbal offer turned down by Southampton – of course he's untouchable.

"Southampton have invested £12m plus add-ons for Lavia - and Man City have a £40m buyout clause."

There were rumors on deadline day that Chelsea had tabled a huge offer for a mystery midfielder and it appears Lavia was the player in question.

The Blues had also shown an interest in Edson Alvarez - who were asking Ajax to sell him to the Premier League club.

Chelsea finally brought Denis Zakaria from Juventus.

The Swiss international has been loaned out for the season, although the Blues have the option of making his move permanent.
