Two security sources confirmed to Reuters that the Islamic State supreme leader was killed during the mission.

Insiders told Al Mayadeen news channel that the victim's name was Rakan Abu Hayel.

Syrian state television's Telegram channel said helicopters had descended on the village of Muluk Saray, but it did not specify who the individual killed was.

“US occupation forces carried out a landing operation using several helicopters in the village of Muluk Saray, in the southern countryside of Qamishli, and killed one person,” the channel said. Syrian public television.

A resident said American helicopters landed in the village after midnight and told residents over loudspeakers to stay inside and keep their lights off.

"They used loudspeakers to call on residents to stay indoors during the operation," the local said.

The resident said the operation lasted several hours and there was no exchange of fire with US troops.
