Starmer's Labor could head for a 100-seat majority, warns Tory polling guru

Labour is "very clearly" the favorite to win the next general election and heading for an overwhelming majority of more than 100, said polling guru Sir John Curtice.

Speaking at the Conservative Party Conference in Birmingham, Professor Curtice said said Sir Keir Starmer's party was, based on numbers, on its way to a "three-digit majority".

If confirmed in the poll due in 2024, it would be the biggest advantage for any political party since at least 2001, when Tony Blair won a 167 majority over William Hague's Tories, and would far exceed Boris Johnson's margin of 80 in 2019.

Curtice said aire to Tory campaigners that Labor had enjoyed an average nine point lead over the Tories in po before the September 23rd mini budget.

But Starmer's party extended its lead to an average of 23 points following the unwelcome 'fiscal event', based on polls taken on Wednesday.

Sir John said the public doubted the "fairness" and "effectiveness" of the mini tax cut budget.

"The tax announcement itself was not well received by the electorate," he said.

But market turmoil has added to "very serious electoral damage" to the Conservative Party's standing over the past week, he said. Truss is now "just as unpopular" as Boris Johnson, he added.
