Sydney Sweeney will star as 'Barbarella' in the remake which she will also produce

Rumors of a 'Barbarella' remake have been swirling around studios for years, but it seems Sony Pictures has finally found an actress who can take on the challenge of filling Jane Fonda's shiny space boots. On Tuesday, Deadline announced that two-time Emmy-nominated Sydney Sweeney, known for HBO's "The White Lotus" and "Euphoria," among other projects, will star in and produce a reimagining of Roger Vadim's 1968 space adventure.

The news follows announcements confirming Sweeney's involvement in two other Sony films. She'll star in an undisclosed role opposite Dakota Johnson in "Madame Web" and both star and executive produce an adaptation of Madison Lawson's thriller novel "The Registration."

As with the original sci-fi film, the first remake of "Barbarella" would have adapted the comic book series by Jean-Claude Forest, which was published as a serial for the French publication V Magazine at the beginning of 1962 before being published as a book in 1964.
