They finished first and second in the group respectively to qualify for the next stage of the games, starting October 22.

Having lost to Sri Lanka earlier in the day, the Netherlands qualified after a victory seven-point clash for the United Arab Emirates Emirates (UAE) over Namibia.

It was the UAE's first-ever victory in the T20 World Cup, in their second tournament only.

Some inconsistent bowling from Namibia saw the UAE score a competitive 148- 3, with fly-half Muhammad Waseem leading with 50 from 41 balls.

Dutch players who stayed on the ground watched eagerly as Namibia then slipped to 69-7, before David Wiese's heroic 55 from 36 balls set them back.

But needing 14 points from the final, Wiese took a long time to give the UAE a victory unexpected - and the Netherlands an unexpected qualification.

In the previous game, Kusal Mendis' 79 on 44 balls took Sri Lanka to 162-6 - the right-hander smashing five sixes in their winning innings.

Max O'Dowd's entertaining 71 from 53 balls kept the Netherlands in the game throughout their innings, but fell 16 short and waited nervously for Game 2 to end.

Sri Lanka qualify in first position, which means they join England, the Afghanistan, Australia and New Zealand in Super 12 Group A, while the Netherlands will face India, Pakistan, South Africa and Bangladesh in Super 12 Group B.

The two groups see another team join them, at the end of group B of the first round, Scotland and Ireland both hoping to qualify in Friday's matches.

The pressure is on for Namibia

Namibia were favorites to join Sri Lanka in the Super 12 stage, as they did in 2021. They shocked Sri Lanka in the tournament opener and the UAE were yet to register a win .

Their bowlers started well, limiting the UAE to just 30 points from the power play at six, before he collapsed.

Half-century opener Waseem anchored the innings before captain CP Rizwan and Basil Hameed capitalized on a few loose pins in the dead.
