The cost of living crisis fueled by energy prices rages on, but Boris Johnson and the Conservative Party are far too busy with their all-important leadership race, writes Paul Routledge

We will learn the worst tomorrow, when the new energy price cap is set.

Experts say a household's average annual gas and electricity bill will almost double to an unaffordable £3,600. But based on the conduct of conservative politicians, you wouldn't know there was a crisis.

From Boris Johnson down, they pretend it's not happening.

They are ostriches too busy participating in a funeral contest to notice that our way of life is falling apart.

As new Prime Minister Liz Truss would probably say: It's a shame.

Instead of doing something in his final days in the departure lounge, Johnson flew to Kyiv to collect a medal and have a street named in his honor.

And he announced a new version of Norman Lamont's famous saying from 1991 that unemployment is "a price worth paying" to defeat inflation. He says skyrocketing fuel bills are the price we must pay to help Ukraine fight off the Russian invasion, now in its seventh month.

It's going well for him. He does not pay for the energy of his house. Yes.

Ideas to protect low- and middle-income people from the horrific price spike are pouring in from businesses, lobby groups and opposition parties.
