The Good House Managers Talk Making Their New England Romantic Comedy Drama [Exclusive Interview]

There really aren't many romantic dramas with older leads. It was really refreshing to watch this flirtation and romance evolve between Weaver and Kline. Were there any considerations you had to make, or was it just shooting a romantic comedy about young people, just with more experienced artists?

Wolodarsky: Yes. I mean, I don't think we ever had a conversation about, "Oh, they're old people." They are two people who are looking for love. And does that change with age? No. I mean, maybe it changes in some ways, but it felt very familiar to us and them. They were very playful.

Forbes: I guess in a way you feel like with these two characters that something is stopping them from... there's an empathy with that, because it feels like they approach each other hesitantly. They were in each other's orbit, but they couldn't make that move. I mean, she was married, they had been in a relationship before and it was probably hurtful. She left and married someone else. So I feel like there's a sweetness, because it's like finally, they're finally taking this risky step. So this way it's a bit different.

Wolodarsky: But again, I think we could write a scene like that, and they could be 17.

Forbes: Sure. It's true.

Wolodarsky: So, I hear what you're saying, but it's like I certainly remember the hesitant feeling you had about, "Does this person love me? Can- I do this move?"

Forbes: I mean, I think what was interesting for us is that there's this element of romantic comedy, but because it's a woman in her 60s and he's it's about her, it's more than that. You know what I mean? There is not just that. And the main part of the story isn't like, "I'm going to find this man, and he's going to save me." She really needs to come to terms with herself. Her journey revolves around her. And only when she takes care of herself can she be open to this relationship. So I think that was really interesting for us, that it was about the whole of a woman...all the elements of her life, her work, her family, her romance, the search for love, all that. We like it.
