The sudden silence of Guantanamo artists

A few weeks ago, Khalid Qasim received news that he had been waiting for 20 year. He had been cleared for release from Guantanamo Bay prison.

By then, Qasim had spent almost half of his life in Guantanamo, between 23 and 43 years old. Like almost all the men sent there, he has never been charged with a crime.

His release order does not yet mean freedom. This is just the start of a long resettlement process which, according to previous resettlements, could take years. Where he will be sent, neither he nor his lawyers know.

In the meantime, Qasim will paint.
