The movie Super Mario Bros. is now one of the 20 greatest movies ever at the box office

While nothing has been officially confirmed as of yet, there's no doubt that Universal, Illumination, and Nintendo will be teaming up for more movies in the future. Plus, given how well "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" performs, it'll be a thing sooner rather than later. Believe me, we won't wait more than two years for a sequel, that's for sure. The big question right now is whether this is just a sequel or something much grander.

The point is, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is still the model every studio wants to replicate. Unfortunately, that's easier said than done. Still, Nintendo's treasure trove of franchises would actually make sense as a connected universe. The first "Mario" movie already introduced Donkey Kong and set the stage for a possible "Luigi's Mansion" movie, in addition to a direct sequel. Add stuff like "Kirby", "Star Fox", and maybe even "Zelda", then bam! You have a cinematic universe.

It's easy to imagine that the powers that be are currently negotiating plans for such a thing as we speak. It's up to Nintendo to decide how far they want this partnership to go. For now, everyone involved can take one hell of a victory lap.
