The Weeknd Cuts Short Los Angeles Concert: "I lost my voice...I'm sorry"

The Weeknd's Saturday night concert at Sofi Stadium in Los Angeles abruptly ended just after 9:30 p.m. afternoon The singer, who was finishing a two-night run at the stadium, said he had lost his voice and didn't think he could deliver the show people had paid for.

"I don't know what just happened... but I just lost my voice," he told the crowd at the stage. "It kills me, I don't want to stop the show but I can't give you the gig I want to give you right now. I'm going to make sure everyone's okay - you'll get your money back - I'll do a show very soon for you guys. But I wanted to come out and personally apologize."

"You know how much this is killing me, I'm sorry. I love you thank you so much" , he said before leaving the stage.

Soon after, the lights in the house came on and members of the public walked around between them not knowing if they should start heading for the exits or hoping for the concert to start again.

The show, which was scheduled to start at 9 p.m., was filmed — partly for a scene from the next HBO Max show "The Idol," which stars Abel "The Weeknd" Tesfaye alongside Lily-Rose Depp. Wearing a white dress and her hair up, she took the stage to deliver key lines for one of the show's penultimate moments. "I had a tough year," she says in character. "This world can be a cruel and unforgiving place and there were times when I didn't know if I was going to make it."

Around 9:17 p.m., the Weeknd makes his entrance, but his voice breaks audibly as he greets near 70,000 people present. The artists managed to complete four songs before he had to cut the show short.

The singer later released a statement on his Instagram story, writing, "My voice went off during the first song and I'm devastated. I felt it go and my heart sank. My sincere apologies to my fans here. I promise to catch up with you with a new date."

The show included two opening acts, prolific producer and multi-instrumentalist Mike Dean, as well as DJ Kaytranada.

The "After Hours" tour was mostly uneventful other than the kickoff sending the trek to Toronto, which was canceled due to an internet outage that affected all of Canada. This local show is postponed to September 22. No word yet on a makeup date for L.A.
