Thor: Love And Thunder Writer Jennifer Kaytin Robinson Clarifies Taika Waititi's Real-Time Directing Style

Robinson told Variety that the first "version" of Waititi's style had the writing team sit around a table, read what they were planning to shoot the next day, and think about ideas while Robinson wrote. "I would just sit with my laptop and listen," Robinson recalled, "and I would just close Heimdall's eyes and write something down, and then turn my computer to him and say, 'That? '"

The second was to walk around the set with his computer, clap with one hand, and follow Waititi through the first blocking rehearsal. Robinson spoke of a surreal moment during one of those days:

"There's a bit that isn't in the movie, but it was Hemsworth and Pratt walking through that trench, and I just remember it was such an out-of-body experience, because I like walking behind Taika and Chris and Chris with a laptop in this literal trench that they've built that feels like you're on a planet. And I'm just like, 'What the hell? what the fuck? How did I get here?" It was very weird."

Some actors might not be comfortable with a shoot like this, but years of playing the same roles probably made improv pretty easy for a Marvel cast. I'd be more concerned about throwing Kate Bush a dance in there, as Waititi once discussed for Christian Bale's Gorr the God Butcher. Since this hasn't been done, editing clearly plays as big a role in the production process as writing.
