Liz Truss: Civil service cutback plans hailed by Rees-Mogg

Preferred Tory Jacob Rees-Mogg has launched yet another attack on the 'hopeless' and 'rotten' culture of public servants doing their jobs from home.

The multi-millionaire, who owns a £5million mansion a few minutes' walk from Parliament, complained that too few commuters were at their Whitehall offices, adding: "Even taking into account the holidays summer, it's hopeless."

It came as he defended leaked remarks by Liz Truss that British workers needed "more bribery" like their overwhelmed counterparts in China.

Labour said Ms Truss' remarks were 'extremely offensive', saying she had effectively called UK workers 'lazy'.

But Mr Rees-Mogg claimed the criticism of her remarks was "fabricated" and that what she said to the Treasury was "sensible".

The Minister for Government Efficiency told the Mail on Sunday: "Liz Truss's sensible comments about the low productivity of the UK economy have drawn misleading political criticism, but they reflect an unfortunate reality in much of the British State.

“This is not good for the government, nor for the public as a whole.”

This comes after The Times reported that the Old Etonian MP for North East Somerset was being appointed as Ms Truss' Leveling Secretary.

Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham joked: 'Heaven knows I'm miserable now.
