A tourist was injured when he fell into the crater of Vesuvius while taking a selfie on a "forbidden road".

The 23-year-old allegedly used his phone to take a selfie when he slipped from his hands and fell into the crater.

He would then have tried to recover the device by descending into the crater before falling several meters after losing his balance.

The emergency services were dispatched and managed to pull him out of the crater.
