Police have opened an investigation into the mysterious sudden death of an Australian student who traveled to Bali for dental treatment.

Niamh Finneran Loader, 25, a masters student in international relations at the University of Western Australia (UWA), died about two weeks ago on the Indonesian island, but little is known about what happened.

Her father, Malcolm Loader, told The West Australian newspaper that she went there for minor dental work and was "very pleased with the results".

He continued, "We have no idea [the cause of his death] at this point."

His parents flew to Bali to organize the repatriation of his body and a fundraising page was set up to help defray the cost of repatriation.

Tributes poured in for the former swim club captain who was described by friends and family as a 'beautiful', 'fun-loving' woman who 'brought some light into the everyone's life".

Her close friend Sian Semple wrote a tribute to her friend saying, "I remember a little red-haired, fair-skinned girl with a very Irish accent that we all quickly learned to love," she wrote.

It is believed that the Loader family moved to Australia from Ireland when Niamh was young.

Ms Semple continued: "During her time at the club, Niamh and her family have made many lifelong friends who I know struggle to understand what happened."
