#TwitterDown: Mass outage affects millions of Twitter users

What do people turn to when Twitter is down?

That's a question millions of Twitter users asked early Thursday morning when the site was unexpectedly shut down for about 40 minutes.

According to DownDetector, users reported issues with the site around 7:58 a.m., when 5,286 reports of the social media platform being down were recorded, peaking at 8:13 a.m., when approximately 29,050 users reported outages.

Service resumed around 8:40 a.m. when Tweets began to post and load.

#TwitterDown was still one of the top trending topics on the website as of 10:00 a.m., with hundreds of thousands of users posting memes and jokes about previous outages.

Twitter support acknowledged the outage of their account at around 9:10 a.m. EST.

“Some of you are having trouble accessing Twitter and we are working to get it back up and running for everyone,” the company said. "Thank you for staying with us."

Thursday's outages come at a controversial time for the company, which on Tuesday sued billionaire Elon Musk for dropping his bid to acquire the company for an estimated $44 billion. The social media giant hopes to close the deal.

Twitter has yet to reveal what may have caused the massive outages.

Twitter was down about 48% year-over-year Thursday morning.
