The government has identified groups which could face restrictions following the publication of the new definition of "extremism", amid growing concerns over threats to social cohesion and British democracy.

A ban on the white supremacist group British National Socialist Movement and Patriotic Alternative from engaging with the government will be considered, as well as the anti- war on terror CAGE, Muslim Engagement and Development (MEND) and Muslim Association with Britain, which it said "raise concern".

The groups will be assessed to determine whether they meet the definition extremism, said Leveling Up secretary Michael Gove.

He told MPs the country's values of inclusiveness and tolerance are "challenged by extremist groups who "radicalize our youth and cause greater polarization within and between communities to serve their own goals."

Earlier, he said the new definition of extremism was not intended to to stop people protesting, fearing it would restrict free speech.

Meanwhile, Labor leader Sir Keir Starmer said former Labor MP Diane Abbott needed “to an arm around her,” but the issue of reinstating the whip was completely different and still under investigation.
