A former prisoner of war who was tortured by the Russians for months and listened to the cries of inmates says he will now return to the front.

Ukrainian soldier Svyatoslav Yermonov lost almost five stones during his captivity in a prison camp run by Moscow forces.

The 33-year-old ex-police officer was released after 16 weeks as part of a prisoner exchange.

Yermonov had fought off invaders in the decimated port city of Mariupol and was captured after being cornered in the Azovstal steelworks fortress.

The father-of-one has been taken to the notorious Olenivka prison in the breakaway Donetsk People's Republic (DPR).

He remembered the prisoners pleading with the guards, "Kill me, just stop torturing me."
