Union Saint-Gilloise 1-4 Bayer Leverkusen (2-5 tot): Alonso's team reserves the last place in the Europa League

Bayer Leverkusen qualified for the semi-finals of the Europa League with a 4-1 defeat against Union Saint-Gilloise, sealing a 5-2 victory on aggregate.

Xavi Alonso's Leverkusen have gone through Thursday's quarter-final second leg without a win in their last three visits to Belgium in European matches, but the Bundesliga side have gotten the job done.

Moussa Diaby's coolly scored goal calmed their nerves in the second minute, with Mitchel Bakker drilling from close range to double the visitors' lead before half-time.

Bakker played a key role in Leverkusen's third game, pressing Union goalkeeper Anthony Moris into a dreadful clearance that was turned into an empty net by Jeremie Frimpong after what had been a brilliant start to the second half from the hosts.

Union got their reward for a fiery response when Casper Terho pulled one back with a deflected strike, but that proved to be only consolation, with Adam Hlozek on hand to add more shine to the Leverkusen win late.

Leverkusen are playing in their first European semi-final since reaching the last four in the Champions League in 2002.
