Russia today mourned its first female regular soldier killed in Ukraine.

Corporal Anastasia Savitskaya, 35, is said to have died another day from the appalling war losses of high-ranking officers in Vladimir Putin's forces.

The soldier, wife and mother of two, considered a "true heroine", was buried today in her hometown of Volgograd.

"The deceased became the first military woman to die during the special military operation," said Alexander Strukov, the head of local veterans.

A friend said, "She had dreamed of serving in the military since childhood and signed a contract when she was 18."

Going to war in Ukraine "was his choice".

Her private husband - an unnamed ex-soldier - said at her funeral, "How am I going to live on now?
