Vladimir Putin's deputy has been called 'deranged' after he claimed the war in Ukraine was a holy conflict with Satan.

Former President Dmitry Medvedev called Ukrainian troops "crazy Nazi drug addicts".

Putin's henchman said the enemy was backed by "a motley pack of growling piglets and stubborn philistines from the disintegrated western empire with saliva running down their chins from their degeneracy" .

His extraordinary rant marked Russia's National Unity Day, but sparked a wave of criticism for the former Kremlin liberal.

Medvedev, who earlier this week explained why Russia might use nuclear weapons, said: "We have the possibility of sending all the enemies into a hell of fire, but that is not our goal.

"We listen to the words of the Creator in our hearts and obey them.

"These words give us a sacred purpose.

"The goal is to stop the supreme ruler of hell, whatever name he uses - Satan, Lucifer or Iblis."

He attacked those who deserted Putin's war and fled abroad to avoid mobilization as "cowardly traitors and greedy defectors".

For four years, from 2008 to 2012, Medvedev served as Russian president with his finger on the Kremlin's nuclear trigger.

In another message, he said that Russia's nuclear arsenal could be used if Ukraine regained any of the territories currently being invaded by Putin.
