An overwhelming majority of voters want the Tories to keep their promise on the 'triple lock' on pensions, a poll reveals today.

Around 75% of respondents think the government should maintain the mechanism which means pensions increase by a maximum of 2.5%, inflation or average earnings.

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt faces growing calls to secure the 10.1% inflation-linked hike in his autumn statement on Thursday.

Caroline Abrahams, Age UK Charity Director, said: 'Governing is choosing', they say. So we fervently hope that in the Autumn Statement, the Chancellor will choose to do the right thing and take action to protect low-income seniors.

"If he does, he will clearly be encouraged by the vast majority of the public."

Warning about the impact of rising real incomes from PBOs, she added: "At Age UK we hear deeply worrying stories from older people about the drastic measures they are taking to saving money - for example making coffee with hot tap water so you don't have to boil a kettle, and regularly eating a handful of biscuits rather than preparing a real meal.

“Our biggest concern is that as the weeks go by and the prices of everyday items continue to rise, an increasing number of seniors will resort to strategies like these , putting their health and well-being at risk."

The triple lockdown – a Conservative manifesto pledge – was suspended last year when wages jumped following the economic rebound from the coronavirus pandemic.
