Watch James Cleverly reveal changes to the UK's legal migration system on Monday December 4, after official statistics showed annual arrivals hit a record high in the year last.

The Home Secretary shared a package of measures aimed at reducing net migration.

He told the House of Commons that the minimum wage required for a skilled worker from overseas would be significantly increased to around £38,000.

The £26,200-a-year increase in visas to work in Britain is part of a wider package announced as Rishi Sunak faces enormous pressure.

The Prime Minister pledged to “do what is necessary” to bring down net migration following an official estimate that levels had peaked at 745,000 in 2022.

The salary figure is less than the £40,000 deal Mr Sunak is said to have struck with his since-sacked home. Secretary of State Suella Braverman to win her support for the Conservative leadership.

Privately, two sources said, Ms. Braverman and Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick had lobbied for the ceiling goes even higher, to £45,000.
