The government unveiled its new definition amid growing concern about threats to social cohesion and British democracy.

Groups covered by the definition extremism, which is designed to include behavior that does not correspond to criminality but is still deemed "unacceptable", will be denied access to government funding and prevented from meeting ministers and officials or getting a platform that could “legitimize” them by associating with the government.

The definition describes extremism. as "the promotion or advancement of an ideology based on violence, hatred or intolerance" which aims to "deny or destroy the fundamental rights and freedoms of others" or "undermine, overthrow or replace the British system of liberal parliamentary democracy and democratic rights.”

This also includes those who “intentionally create a permissive environment for others to achieve” any of these goals.

Mr. Gove, the communities secretary, who oversaw the formulation of the new definition, said it would "ensure that the government does not inadvertently provide a platform for those who seek to subvert democracy and deny the fundamental rights of 'other'.
