'We all imagined another ending' - Azpilicueta pays tribute to Luis Enrique after Spain exit

A number of Spanish players paid tribute to Luis Enrique after he stepped down as head coach on Thursday.

Spain were knocked out of the World Cup Round of 16 on penalties by Morocco on Tuesday, a shock loss that ultimately cost Luis Enrique his job.

The Royal Football Federation confirmed on Thursday that they would not renew his contract, which expired at the end of the tournament, and later revealed that Luis de la Fuente was set to return to the role after being in charge of the Spanish Under-21 side.

Luis Enrique's former players showed their gratitude after the announcement, with Cesar Azpilicueta sending him their best wishes on social media.

"We all imagined another ending after months of hard work, passion, dedication and commitment," Azpilicueta posted on Instagram.

"Thank you very much for the confidence, Luis Enrique, and all the coaching staff, I wish you the best for the future."

Gavi was made his Spain debut by Luis Enrique last year, becoming La Roja's youngest player at just 17 years and 62 days.

The Barcelona midfielder also sent a message to his former head coach on Instagram: "Thank you so much for betting and trusting me in the national team, sir!

"I wish you good luck and success in the future, you gave your all for the team and we will always be grateful to you!"

Pedri also enjoyed his first international outing under Luis Enrique and is one of the young stars who seem to have given Spain a promising future, despite the disappointment in Qatar.

"Thank you so much for everything, Luis," Pedri added on Instagram. "For your trust and support from the very beginning, and for always believing and caring for this group.

"We didn't get where we wanted to in this World Cup, but I'm sure the future will bring you more success."
