Question Time: Attorney General says single mothers are 'better off'

Attorney General Suella Braverman has been freelancing for the post of Prime Minister following the chaos surrounding the bitter resignation of Boris Johnson.

But who is the cabinet minister who went rogue?

The MP for Fareham appeared on ITV's Peston on Wednesday night (6 July) following a wave of ministerial resignations.

“If there is a leadership race, I will put my name in the ring,” Ms Braverman told the broadcaster, after asking Mr Johnson to leave.

The decision was highly unusual - and was also ridiculed. Usually a cabinet minister has to resign if he no longer has confidence in the prime minister.

And Ms Braverman would have been one of the first to come out of the blocks in the upcoming Conservative Party leadership race.

Suella Braverman - formerly Suella Fernandes before her 2018 marriage - grew up in Wembley, north-west London, and was brought up by parents of Indian descent who had emigrated to Britain in the 1960s from Kenya and Mauritius.

Earning a partial scholarship to a fee-paying secondary school, she went on to study law at Cambridge and became a barrister.

She contested a number of hopeless Conservative seats before finally getting her big shot at the 2005 general election, being elected in Kent.
