It's the Riviera, not the French or the Italian. Consider the Bulgarian Riviera instead, which should be a summer hotspot.

Airline Jet2 says it's already taken so many bookings in the region that it will offer dozens of additional flights next July, August and September, and the company has also revealed plans to offer a record number of high-season hotel choices in Bulgaria's main resorts.

Jet2 boss Steve Heapy says: "Many of us still view holidays as essential purchases and demand is particularly strong where there is good value for money, which is certainly the case in Bulgaria."

The researchers' basket of eight items (including a bottle of water, coffee, sunscreen, and a dinner with drinks) costs just £26 in Bulgaria. In Cyprus the bill is £56, on the Costa del Sol it is £60 and in Lanzarote £71.
