Wife of sacked minister calls Liz Truss a 'fool' in crony line

The wife of a minister fired by Liz Truss has called the new prime minister a "fool" in a social media post about her husband's sacking.

Felicity Cornelius-Mercer has denounced the new prime minister, saying the "system stinks" a few hours after Mrs. Truss began her redesign.

She also said her husband had questioned Mrs. Truss: "Why would you do this, who is going to be better in this role than me, which of your homies gets the job, you promised a meritocracy?"

And she claimed the new Tory leader replied, "I can't answer that, Johnny."

Earlier Mr Mercer, who did not say who he supported in the Tory leadership race, said he was "disappointed" to be sacked as minister of Veterans Affairs.< /p>

In an apparent beating of Ms Truss, who has been accused of packing her cabinet with a clique of allies, he said he accepted the Prime Minister has "the right to reward his supporters".

Before she won the keys to No 10, Tory MPs urged Ms Truss to unite the party and take a “big tent” approach.
