The wolves remain at large after escaping from a Canadian zoo claiming they may have been deliberately set free.

The Greater Vancouver Zoo was closed following the incident and a "small number" of wolves are still roaming free.

In a statement, the zoo said most of the wolves were now safely back in their care and that the manner in which they escaped was "suspicious and believed to be due to malicious intent".

A Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) investigation is currently underway into how they exited the zoo with a hole made in the fence that appeared to be deliberate.

"Langley RCMP are investigating what appears to be illegal entry and vandalism," zoo officials said in the statement.

Normally, there would be 15 wolves held in enclosures including six cubs, the zoo says on its website, but the number of wolves that escaped has not been revealed.

All the zoo statement said was that most had been recovered and "a small number" remained free.

It has also been stated that wolves do not pose a threat to the public.

After the wolves escaped, police and conservation officers were called and so far there have been no reports of attacks or injuries by the animals.
