Woman thrown to death from train after resisting sexual assault in front of her son

A woman was killed when she was ejected from a moving train after fighting back at a man who attempted to sexually assault her.

The 30-year-old was traveling with her nine-year-old son from Lakhan Majra to Tohana in northern India on Thursday evening.

Police say a 28-year-old man, believed to be intoxicated, approached the woman when the three of them were the only passengers on a bus.

When the man tried to assault the woman, she fought back, before the man pushed her off the moving train and ran away.

The victim's body was found on the train tracks near Tohana Station and the man has since been arrested.

“The accused boarded the train at Narwana in Jind,” Railway Police Sub-Inspector Jagdish Singh said in quotes reported by the .

"After seeing the woman alone with a child, he tried to molest her. As she fought back, the accused pushed her off the train and fled."

The woman's husband was waiting at Tohana Railway Station in Haryana State.

When the train arrived, he found his child alone and crying, before the boy explained to his father what had happened.

"My wife called me when she was 20 kilometers away and asked me to come to the station and pick them up," the woman's husband told police.

The woman and her son were returning home after visiting his parents.

Fatehabad Police said the suspect has been identified as Sandeep Kumar from the nearby town of Kalwan.

“Sandeep is a drug addict and was drunk when the incident happened,” Fatehabad Police Commissioner Astha Modi said.

Kumar has been charged with murder and assault or criminal use of force against a woman with intent to outrage her modesty.
