A medical student has been arrested for the murder and apparent organ harvesting of a Mexican woman who traveled to meet him in Peru after he began an online romance.

Blanca Arellano, 51, had met Juan Pablo Jesus Villafuerte, 37, on a gaming app and, thanks to their mutual interest in video games, they had started a virtual relationship before agreeing to visit him in Peru.

She made the 3,000 mile trip to Huacho to meet the student at Jose Faustino Sanchez University on July 27, and stayed in constant communication with her family in Mexico, where it seemed like all was well.

But the last contact with Ms Arellano was on November 7 and after that her family appealed for information.

His niece tweeted after the disappearance: "Over the months my aunt would tell me she was happy, relaxed and the relationship was going great."

She also wrote, "Never thought I would be in this situation, but today I am asking for your support in spreading this message and finding one of the most loved and important people in my life."

In regular Twitter updates, she wrote about how her fears were growing for her aunt's safety after communicating with Villafuerte who was her only contact in Peru.

“I decided to communicate with Juan P because he was the only contact she had in this country and that is where our fear was triggered,” she said.

Then she posted a message from Villafuerte where he said that Blanca had decided to return to Mexico.
