Women's World Cup ticket sales top 1 million

June 9 - Next month's Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand is on track to become the highest-attended standalone women's sporting event of all time, with over a million tickets sold.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino released a statement saying 1,032,884 tickets had been sold up to Friday morning local time in Sydney, exceeding pre-tournament sales for the 2019 edition in France.

The 2023 edition presents an expanded field of 32 teams, compared to 24 in France.

"Momentum is building in host countries and around the world," Infantino said.

FIFA had previously announced that Australia's opening game against Ireland would change venue to the 83,500 capacity Stadium Australia, the tournament's largest stadium, due to the heavy request for tickets from the public.

The World Cup kicks off at Eden Park in Auckland/Tāmaki Makaurau on Thursday, July 20, with co-hosts New Zealand taking on 1995 champions Norway.

“With more than a month to go, we have surpassed the number of sales for France 2019, which means that Australia and New Zealand 2023 are on track to become the Women's World Cup most popular FIFA Women's World Cup in history. The future is women - and thank you to the fans for supporting what will be the greatest FIFA Women's World Cup ever!" said Infantino.

"The momentum is building in the host countries and around the world, and I look forward to seeing you there to see the stars of women's football shine on the world stage," he said.< /p>
