Vladimir Putin will be held accountable for 'war crimes' committed in recent days, world leaders promised today - as 'weeping' Russian diplomats risk humiliation on the world stage.

In a strong statement, the G7 countries - the UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the US and the EU - warned that the Russian President would be held responsible for sickening attacks on civilian targets.

Prime Minister Liz Truss spoke today with her G7 counterparts and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and in a joint statement they said, "We will hold President Putin and those responsible to account."

They pledged never to recognize Russia's annexation of four Ukrainian regions - Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhya and Kherson - or the "fake referendums" Moscow is using to justify it.

The joint statement continues: "We deplore Russia's deliberate escalation measures, including partial mobilization of reservists and irresponsible nuclear rhetoric, which endanger global peace and security.

"We reaffirm that any use of chemical, biological or nuclear weapons by Russia would have serious consequences."
