More than 20,000 dead

Turkey and Syria earthquake death toll topped 20,000 as rescue efforts failed, even as the first UN aid convoy reached Syria. Recep Tayyip Erdogan said at a press conference in the Turkish town of Osmaniye. and help desperate survivors. Hundreds of thousands of people were left homeless in sub-freezing temperatures.

In Kahramanmaras, a hard-hit Turkish town near the epicenter of the quake , survivors searched for missing relatives among masses of lifeless bodies. In Hatay, a parking lot in front of a hospital served as an open-air morgue. There, hundreds of families searched for dead relatives, opening and closing body bags, discouraged by the countless rows of corpses.
