Eight children were killed Sunday morning in a shooting in Shreveport, Louisiana, police say.
Shreveport Police Department officers responded to the 300 block of West 79th Street just after 6 a.m. following reports of a domestic disturbance. Police spokesman Christopher Bordelon described the crime scene as “extensive,” spanning two homes in the neighborhood and a third on nearby Harris Street.
Ten people were shot — eight fatally — ranging in age from 1 to 14, Bordelon said during a press briefing.
“The individual responsible, after leaving the scene, committed a carjacking right here near the corner of West 79th and Lynnwood, and at that time, Shreveport Police patrol officers found themselves behind that vehicle during a pursuit,” Bordelon said.
Officers shot and killed the suspect during the chase, Bordelon said.
“We believe he is the only individual who fired shots at these locations here,” Bordelon said.
Police did not share any information about the suspect, but Bordelon said some of the children in the homes “were his descendants.”
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
