Watch the Netflix show Sweet magnolias sees a 30% viewership drop with the season 5 premiere, with a season 6 renewal not yet confirmed.
Based on the romance novel series by Sherryl Woods, Sweet Magnolias stars JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Brooke Elliott and Heather Headley as a group of women helping each other navigate life, love and loss in South Carolina.
By DeadlineTHE Sweet magnolias The season 5 premiere attracted 2.8 million views, placing it at No. 4 on Netflix’s weekly Top 10 for English-language shows, which should go a long way in helping the series secure a renewal. However, this represents a 30% drop in first week viewership compared to the season 3 premiere, which generated four million views.
Although it is unclear what could be the cause of this decline, this is not a new phenomenon for Netflix. Several of the streamer’s hit shows saw first-week drops with their new seasons, including season 2 of the hit comedy The four seasons. The subject definitely weighs Sweet magnolias‘ favor, with romance shows generally seeing smaller declines compared to other genres.
However, this could have long-term repercussions on the future of Sweet magnolias. To date, there has been no official Sweet magnolias renewal of season 6, and Netflix seems to be taking a “wait and see” approach. If that’s the case, a week of preview release is less than ideal for the series’ chances of a return.
That said, it is possible Sweet magnolias season 5 can recover and post strong enough viewing figures throughout the season to warrant a renewal. As one of the most popular and Successful Netflix adaptationsit makes sense that the streaming giants would want to keep the series going for as long as possible, and provided there’s continued interest, there’s every reason to bring the series back.
The fact that Netflix has been renewing its shows with larger drops also bodes well for Sweet magnolias. And, provided Season 5 can wrap up in a satisfying way, while also creating more storytelling opportunities for Season 6, a renewal would be the next logical step.
With Actor Carson Rowland leaves the series ahead of the season 5 premiere, this created a casting shakeup and allowed the series to go in a new direction. This could work well for Season 6, with more potential departures, or even replacements possibly planned, to keep things fresh and exciting.
