Emergency services in Castilla y León said they received several calls regarding the collapse of the fountain. Part of the structure gave way after several people climbed it to celebrate Spain’s victory, local media reported.
Emergency services said they notified the city’s local police, as well as the Salamanca Civil Guard, its firefighters and the local emergency medical service, who dispatched a mobile intensive care unit and a basic resuscitation ambulance to the scene.
The emergency medical service then requested the presence of the Civil Guard at the local health center to investigate the death of the child who was being treated there, the Castilla y León regional government website said.
He also asked the Civil Guard to activate psychological support for the family.
The city council said it “hopes for a speedy recovery of others affected by the incident.”
Spain beat Argentina 1-0 on Sunday in the World Cup final after Ferran Torres scored in overtime.
This is the country’s second World Cup victory, following its last victory in 2010.
Earlier this month, three people died from asphyxiation during World Cup celebrations in Mexico, while a 30-year-old man also died after suffering an epileptic seizure.
