4 reasons to trust again

A second reason to trust again is to start new relationships. Perhaps a friend, partner or spouse has broken trust with you significantly. Your friend lied to you or said mean things behind your back. A partner may have forgotten your birthday or forgotten to pick you up for a date. Or maybe your spouse cheated on you and you are now going through a divorce. Each of these circumstances can injure us considerably and cause us pain. In addition to causing us pain, they can cause us to no longer trust these people. It can even prevent us from trusting anyone again.

At times like these, it's important to remember that not everyone is like that friend, partner, or spouse who lied to you, hurt you, or betrayed you. It is worth opening your heart and trust to others if they have demonstrated the actions of a trustworthy person. Even if you never see that trustworthy friend, partner, or spouse again, you can still find trustworthy people in the world who deserve your trust. Often we wish we could trust those people who were once close to us, but we have not received any tangible proof that they are worthy of our trust.

If the person took the right steps to become worthy of our trust again, we should be willing to trust them again. However, if you have been sexually, physically, or emotionally abused, you don't have to trust them again. Even if the person may apologize or act convincing, it is best not to rekindle relationships with those who abused us sexually, physically or emotionally. We are never called to trust those who have hurt us in this way. Although we must forgive, that does not mean that what they did was right. On the contrary, forgiving them means that we give everything to Christ.
