Now, an unofficial team of private sector medical examiners has questioned the ruling on Cobain’s cause of death.
After reviewing autopsy results and crime scene records, researchers suggested that certain aspects of the case pointed to homicide rather than suicide.
Bryan Burnett, an independent crime scene reconstruction expert, cited bloodstains, clothing evidence and damage to the muscian’s mouth that he said were not consistent with a typical suicide scenario.

The team suggested that Cobain was confronted by one or more assailants who forced a heroin overdose to incapacitate him before one of them shot him in the head, placed the gun in his arms and left behind a fake suicide note.
Despite these assertions, the authorities have not changed their position.

Cobain’s official cause of death still stands

After Kurt Cobain’s death, police said he injected ten times the normal amount that even a heavy heroin user would have consumed. The autopsy also detected morphine, codeine and diazepam in his system.
The King County Medical Examiner ruled the cause of death to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
At the time, a Seattle Police Department spokesperson said, “Kurt Cobain committed suicide in 1994. This is still the position held by the Seattle Police Department. »
It is well known that Cobain suffered from severe depression and years of chronic drug use.
In March 1994, a month before his death, he was hospitalized in Rome, Italy, after an overdose of champagne and Rohypnol.

Love found him unconscious in his room at the Excelsior Hotel. She later suggested the overdose was a suicide attempt, although her management team said at the time it was accidental.

For Love, the new investigation feels like history is repeating itself.

As recently as 2024, Love admitted that she was unprepared for the backlash that followed Kurt Cobain’s death.
In an interview with the Evening standardshe said she always wanted to be seen as a slut, while Cobain wanted to be loved.
“People said I was very difficult. They said I was obnoxious. Yes, I am completely obnoxious and I will never apologize for that,” Love said. “I always wanted to be known as a slut. Being loved was never my thing. Kurt wanted to be loved but I didn’t.”
She added, “He was able to hide behind me, but then I was hated. Then Kurt died and the hatred towards me reached a whole new level. I didn’t plan on this.”
In a 2011 interview with Vanity FairLove also revealed lingering anger over his death.

“If [Cobain] I’ll be right back, I should kill him, for what he did to us,” she said. “I would fucking kill him. I would fuck him, and then I would kill him. He attempted suicide three times! He overdosed at least five times.
Kurt Cobain’s memory still shapes Courtney Love’s life today

Despite the controversy, Love seems focused on honoring Cobain’s memory.
“She would like Kurt to be able to rest in peace, but it seems like that will never happen. And as the years go by, it will be something else,” the source said.
The source added that the singer was going to choose to pay tribute to him instead of reliving this horrible moment in her life and not giving her a life she doesn’t need.
Meanwhile, Love, who has battled drug addiction in the past, is now sober and has been living in London since 2019.
She is also the subject of an intimate documentary titled “Antiheroine,” premiering at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival.
The film examines her relationship with Cobain, her struggles with addiction and decades of public scrutiny.

In the documentary, she talks about falling in love when Hole toured with Nirvana in 1991.
“When you find someone you get along with really well and can be yourself with, it’s easy,” she said. “We knew we were in love, we knew we wanted to have a baby right away. What bothered us was his need to be completely forgotten.”
She also recalled the night Cobain died while she was staying at the Peninsula Beverly Hills during rehab. She said he tried to call her, but the front desk did not answer the late-night call.
