According to Miley, Swift’s casting had everything to do with the film’s local aesthetic and where both stars were in their careers at the time.
“For this scene, get the kettle,” Miley joked. “So the way Taylor Swift ended up in the movie ‘Hannah Montana’ was because it was kind of the beginning of her career, and they were looking for someone who would perform authentically, without shadow, I guess, in a barn. We both performed in the barn.”
At the time, Miley and Taylor were rising country stars, which made Swift a natural choice for the film’s small Southern town setting.

Looking back, Miley had nothing but praise for Swift’s contribution to the film’s emotional ending. She described the track as a “banger” that “stands the test of time” and that she “ate with that one”.

Miley also revealed to Variety that Swift’s involvement wasn’t just luck, but was the result of a competitive creative process during the film’s development. “Taylor had pitched this song along with a lot of other writers and songs, and we were just putting together what would bring the story of the film to life the most,” Cyrus said.
She then explained why the song was chosen for such a pivotal moment in the film. “So we wanted a really big song for the finale,” the actress added. “It had to be celebratory because, you know, Miley had obviously just revealed the biggest secret.”
Cyrus continued, “And so we needed something that was like the kind of balloon that drops all the way to the bottom, you’re pinned to the ground, you stay still, but then it has to go all the way back to the top, and so I love that song.”

But for Miley, honoring the past meant keeping things real. “I didn’t want to take this modern approach to Hannah. I wanted to keep it preserved,” Cyrus said in her Variety cover story. She said making the birthday special “made it feel like home again.”
The intimate event was attended by an audience of 215 people, where Miley performed fan-favorite tracks including “This Is the Life,” “The Climb” and “The Best of Both Worlds.”
She also debuted a brand new original song created specifically for the special, currently streaming on Disney+ and Hulu.
