Castel beer brand returns to sponsorship of Malawian football

April 18 - Beer brand Castel is back to sponsor Malawian football with an €887,000 (Kawcha 1 billion) commitment to the Local Challenge Cup.

The new sponsorship contract will last for three years, with an annual investment by Castel of €283,000 (320 million Kwacha). The winners will receive €44,000 in prize money (50 million Kwacha) and the runners-up will pocket half of this amount. The losing semi-finalists will receive €8,800 (10 million Kwacha).

“This is a huge economic liability and an excellent platform for developing talent in Malawi,” said Castel Managing Director Thomas Reynaud.

"Our commitment is to ensure that we support the government in developing talent from below and that the business has a positive impact on society."

“We thought it was very important to increase the happiness of the fans. You know, Blantyre was hit by Cyclone Freddy. We would like to see a lot of fun in the people. is an important bond among the population. We want to see more fun and happiness."

The Challenge Cup serves as Malawi's national cup and brings together all clubs from amateur level to the Super League, the country's elite.

In 2019, the beer brand withdrew its financial support due to declining sales, but their return represents a historic deal for the local game. Football Association of Malawi (FAM) President Walter Nyamilandu claimed it was a record deal.

"We look forward to lighting the fire that was missing to propel football to greater heights," said Nyamilandu. "This evening is of the utmost importance, the commitment that Castel has set aside over K1 billion for the sponsorship of the Castel Challenge Cup for three years, from 2023 to 2025."

"Castel is pumping over K320 million into competitive football this year alone. That's huge by our standards. It's a dream come true as the football family has long yearned for such sponsorship. I can't help but pinch myself for such a bargain.”
