The chess world has been rocked by shocking allegations of cheating as the world champion retired for the first time.

World chess champion Magnus Carlsen shocked the sport when he withdrew from the Sinquefield Cup in St Louise after a shock third round loss to newcomer Hans Niemann.

It was Carlsen's first loss for the Whites in several years to a much lower-ranked Niemann and sparked accusations of cheating after the Norwegian shared a cryptic message.

This is potentially the most serious case of alleged cheating in international chess since the memorable Toiletgate Championship match in 2005.
