Colin Farrell Hopes The Penguin Series Will Start Filming In 2023, And He Still Wants To Star In 'The Batman 2'

Colin Farrell recently said he hopes to begin filming his Penguin series for HBO Max in 2023. Variety confirmed in March that HBO Max had given a direct order for the series, which will be a spin-off of the film "The Batman" by Matt Reeves. Farrell debuted as Oswald Copperpot/Penguin in the film. The actor told ET that he hopes his Penguin future extends beyond the spin-off series and includes "The Batman" movie.

"Oh my god, are you kidding me?" Farrell said rhetorically when asked if he would play Penguin again on the big screen in the sequel to "The Batman." "It's so much fun, are you kidding [with] me? I walked around the block. It was an easy sport, I mean...it was a joy."

Farrell continued of the sequel, "Matt lives up to his bullshit, you know, hovering over the keyboard and just planning the story because he's so meticulous. He's so obsessed with what he does, but he's also all over [HBO Max's] Penguin [series]. I mean, he's not going to direct it but he's all over the structure of the scripts and who's going to direct them. And so, it is exciting."

The 'Sugar' actor's new Apple TV+ sci-fi series kicks off this month and will run through the fall, hence the delay in filming for the Penguin series. Farrell can currently be seen in Ron Howard's rescue drama "Thirteen Lives," now in theaters and streaming August 5 on Prime Video.

"The Batman" received rave reviews in March, with Farrell's prosthetic-laden supporting turn as Penguin garnered acclaim. The release of Warner Bros. grossed $369 million in the United States and $770 million worldwide. The studio confirmed in April that Reeves and star Robert Pattinson would return for a second film.

In Variety's review of "The Batman", Chief Film Critic Peter Debruge singled out Reeves for doing "something relatively unique here, at least by comic book standards and movies," adding, "This grounded, often brutal, nearly three-hour film noir ranks among the best of the genre, even though - or more aptly, because - what makes the film so great is is his desire to dismantle and question the very concept of superheroes.

As for Farrell's Penguin series, the actor had this to say earlier this year when officially announcing the series: "The world that Matt Reeves has created for 'The Batman' is one that deserves a deeper look through the eyes of Oswald Cobblepot. I couldn't be more excited to continue this exploration of Oz as he rises through the dark ranks to become The Penguin. It would be nice to see him. back to the streets of Gotham for a little madness and a little mayhem."

"The Batman" is now streaming on HBO Max.
