Conor Benn calls out WBC over 'egg contamination' news as drug test row rumbles

Conor Benn has aired his frustrations at the WBC after clearing the British welterweight of an intentional doping offense after ruling that a 'very high egg consumption' was seen as a 'reasonable explanation' for adverse results of two drug tests sampled in July and September, respectively. The Destroyer also thanked the governing body for clearing its name, though it was adamant that its own scientists and legal team determined that the initial test results were "completely unreliable".

The showdown between Benn and Chris Eubank Jr was called off in October after traces of clomiphene (a fertility drug) were found in the fighter's system.

The Matchroom boxer has since been fighting to clear his name as he continues to maintain his innocence and although he has made the breakthrough, Benn is still not satisfied.

Last week, the WBC disclosed in a statement that the WBC claimed they could not find conclusive evidence of intentional ingestion and instead pointed to Benn's very high egg consumption as a reasonable explanation of why the Prohibited Substance was found. in the blood of the Briton.

This has now made Benn worse, although he's grateful that they put him back in the standings and he was allowed to fight.

Benn said in a statement, "The WBC has found me innocent of being a drug cheater. I am grateful for the final discovery.

"It was the right decision and it was the only one I was willing to accept.

"The easiest option would have been to accept a six-month ban, save myself a huge legal bill, and just move on, but my reputation and family name are worth more than that for me.

"My only frustration is that the manner in which I was exonerated seemed to create new questions and further fuel baseless negative speculation."

He later added, "Staying silent when I have this evidence in my possession and listening to ignorant and uninformed comments was one of the hardest parts to deal with. Even after the WBC statement , I could have just told my time, I won't stay silent. and got the facts straight.

"So here's what I can say. In my defense to the WBC and the 270-page report provided to them, at no point did I indicate that I had failed any VADA tests because of contaminated eggs.

"As part of their lengthy investigation, the WBC had their own experts review my supplements and died and they concluded that egg contamination was the most likely cause.

“These experts have seen this problem arise in elite athletes in other sports and I have no reason to question their analysis when it concludes that I am not a cheater.

“However, I feel that the WBC statement did a disservice to my defense, which was based on a comprehensive scientific review of testing procedures that set out a number of reasons why we believe that the results were completely unreliable and proven beyond a reasonable doubt that I am innocent.

"The report prepared by the scientific and legal team contained a thorough analysis of both tests and concluded that there was clear evidence of fundamental flaws and irregularities.

"As an example, my smile seems to have come back clear the first three times it was tested.

"Without explanation, he was retested after nine days and only then did he show a trace of positive results. He should have only been tested once! These critical results have been approved by an independent scientific expert who provides accreditation to laboratories and his opinion was that many of the issues were so troubling and serious that the laboratory could lose its accreditation.

"My team will escalate issues to the relevant agency so they can make their own decision."

Benn's promoter Eddie Hearn has hinted that the matter with the WBC is not yet completely over, hinting that Benn could potentially pursue further legal action to clear his name completely.
