County Championship: Kent dominates day one in rain against Northants

Grant Stewart (second from left) celebrates taking a wicket for Kent
LV= County Championship Division One, The Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence, Canterbury (day one): Northamptonshire 89-7: Vasconcelos 39; Stewart 3-6Kent: Still to beat

Grant Stewart took 3-6 and Michael Hogan 2-36 as the Spitfires exploited the wet and dark conditions to leave visitors deep in the mud at the end of a truncated evening session.

Ricardo Vasconcelos was Northamptonshire's top scorer with 39 but fell in the only most played after tea before the game was abandoned due to poor light. St Lawrence Ground wiped out the morning session but the home side were clearly the happiest after winning the coin toss and shaking off Northamptonshire's best order in the possible 26 overs.

When the game finally started at 2.15pm BST, the visitors first scored quickly.

Vasconcelos drove Matt Quinn's first pitch of the day for four and they galloped to 26 without loss, until Hogan trapped Hassan Azad lbw for seven in the sixth over.

In the next , Quinn sent Sam Whiteman's center stump flying for just one bowlers single and the first two changes then took wickets with their first deliveries.

Joey Evison hit with the first ball of the 12th, causing Ben Compton to catch Luke Procter square-legged for eight and Stewart then took Rob Keogh for three early in the 16.

Stewart then took a superb catch back to dismiss Josh Cobb for seven, clinging on to a violent ankle-high drive, before taking Lewis McManus behind for five.

Tea was originally scheduled for 4:10 p.m....
