David Warner: Cricket Australia could lift lifetime ban on coaching

Warner was banned from elite cricket for 12 months and from leadership positions for life by the governing body in 2018 for his role in the infamous Africa ball tampering scandal South.

But after Aaron Finch resigned as one-day international captain of the 'Australia, Warner has been called to fill the vacancy.

The opening hitter has previously been a substitute as ODI captain in 2016 and 2017 and was vice-captain of the Test team when he was banned.

Under current rules, any player who accepts a sanction, as 35-year-old Warner did, waives the right to a review of his sanction. But on Friday, CA's board asked its integrity officer to propose a change. Warner said: "I just have to accept the decision that will be rendered.

"He thinks I can discuss with the integrity unit. If I get the chance, I'll sit down and chew some fat and see where we are.

"If it gets knocked down, we'll go from there, but I'm a leader on this team no matter what."

When asked if he wanted to be captain, Warner replied, "If it ever came up it would be a privilege, but for me it's all about focus about the next game and what I need to do for the team."

CA said in a statement: "The amendment would allow a person to request a sanction they have accepted be reviewed after an appropriate period of time.

"The onus would be on the applicant to prove that they had undergone genuine reform relevant to the offense for which they were sanctioned born.

"Any review would not visit the initial sanction, other than the suspension of a sentence in recognition of true reform."

Thursday, CA President Lachlan Henderson said, "The point of view within Cricket Australia is that David is doing particularly well on the pitch and making a great contribution off the pitch.

"Our intention is to review the code as soon as possible. It's in no one's interest that we delay this.

"That would be in time for any future leadership conversation in relation to David."

Warner missed the third T20 against England in Canberra with a slight neck injury sustained in Game 2 of the series.
